In a heartfelt Christmas and New Year message, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has urged Ghanaians to embrace unity and dialogue in the aftermath of the 2024 general elections.
“I am happy that God has intervened in a rather very difficult election in this country,” he said, acknowledging the unexpected outcome that saw the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secure a decisive victory under former President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership.
Bagbin emphasized the importance of humility in accepting the election results, stating, “My call to every one of us is to accept the results in humility…To agree that this is how the Almighty God wants it to be and for us to reflect.”
He encouraged Ghanaians to engage in introspection, thinking deeply about what went wrong and what went right, not just for individual growth but also for the nation’s progress.
The Speaker warned against the dangers of division and tribalism, saying, “We are living in tribes. We will be divided and that will give room for hatred and as you know the devil will play its role.”
Instead, he advocated for Ghanaians to “come together, continue to be open to each other, and dialogue” to resolve their differences peacefully, using the rule of law as their guide.
Bagbin’s message was one of hope and optimism, despite the challenges Ghana has faced in governance, economic management, and democratic processes.
He expressed confidence that the lessons learned will lead to improved governance and performance in 2025, stressing that national unity is crucial for Ghana’s progress.
As he put it, “Without a nation, we are living in silos… I think it is important for us to come together” to build a stronger, more united nation.
