A severe fuel shortage has left Ghana on the brink of a major power crisis, with only five hours of fuel stock remaining, according to John Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Yapei Kusawgu.
Speaking after the inauguration of President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday, Jinapor revealed that the country’s fuel reserves are critically low, with less than two days’ worth of heavy fuel oil and diesel fuel available.
“We are in a very serious situation,” Jinapor warned, criticizing the outgoing administration for failing to procure necessary fuel supplies, leaving the incoming administration vulnerable.
Jinapor said that despite assurances from the outgoing administration that fuel parcels had been procured, checks indicated that there is not enough fuel to last even two days.
The MP cautioned that even if the incoming administration orders fuel immediately, it will take approximately eight weeks for it to arrive and be processed, leading to an extended period of power outages.
“We are in for real trouble,” Jinapor concluded, urging immediate action to address the looming crisis.
