Former Defense Minister Dominic Nitiwul has opened up about the previous government’s efforts to address the protracted conflict in Bawku, admitting that despite maintaining stability, achieving lasting peace proved to be a significant challenge.
In an interview with Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, January 14, Nitiwul reflected on the government’s efforts, stating that while significant strides were made, the inability to achieve lasting peace remains a notable regret.
The conflict, which has its roots in historical and chieftaincy disputes between the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups, has resulted in numerous casualties, including 41 deaths in recent clashes.
Nitiwul highlighted the government’s initiatives, including deploying security forces, facilitating dialogue, and collaborating with traditional leaders. However, these efforts only yielded temporary stability.
Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo also acknowledged the issue in his final State of the Nation Address, emphasizing the importance of building trust and giving critical attention to the conflict.
