John Mahama, the flagbearer of the NDC, has reaffirmed his commitment to reviving trade and business operations in the Ashanti Region and promised specific interventions to help local business owners and traders.
Mahama outlined plans to establish a fixed exchange rate system while speaking at the “Enti Asanteman Aseda Ni” walk in Kumasi on Sunday, December 1.
He clarified that by stabilizing the cedi’s value relative to the US dollar, this initiative would make the business environment in the region more stable and conducive to growth.
Although the Ashanti Region is frequently seen as a bastion of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahama recognized its importance and pointed out that it continues to be a crucial battleground for both major political parties.
He promised that during the next elections, the NDC would step up its efforts to garner significant support in the region.
Mahama suggested the establishment of five specialized banks to help importers with port clearance procedures as part of his vision for economic empowerment.
“These banks will offer a system where traders can secure funding for their goods. The banks will cover the costs, temporarily hold the containers, and allow traders to pay in manageable instalments before collecting their goods,” he explained.
He went into further detail about his intentions to stabilize the currency for importers and pledged to put in place safeguards against the negative effects of volatile exchange rates.
He went on to say that the Ashanti Region’s economic development would be given top priority in the NDC’s policies, guaranteeing access to jobs, resources, and infrastructure required to assist regional companies.
Mahama reiterated his party’s dedication to meeting the needs of the Ashanti Region while highlighting the region’s contributions to the NDC’s prior achievements.
“The Ashanti Region is not merely a stronghold for any one party; it is a vital part of Ghana’s economy. We are determined to deliver the opportunities and development it deserves,” he concluded.
