Former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame has strongly criticized current Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine for dropping several high-profile cases without consulting President John Dramani Mahama. Dame described this decision as “alarming and detrimental to the interests of the republic.”
Speaking to journalists in Accra today, Dame expressed concern that Ayine’s primary consideration in discontinuing these cases was the position of defense lawyers rather than the interest of the republic.
“The people of Ghana should be very scared if we have an AG whose primary consideration… is the position of defence lawyers… rather than the interest of the republic,” he said.
Dame also questioned Ayine’s claim that he didn’t consult President Mahama before making these decisions.
“Even more scary and bizarre is the claim of Dr. Ayine that he did not consult President John Dramani Mahama…,” he added.
The cases in question involve significant financial losses to taxpayers and are related to the banking sector crisis, which has had a substantial impact on Ghana’s economy.
“The cases involve the loss of colossal sums of taxpayers’ monies… and some relate to the banking sector crisis…,” Dame noted.
In response, Dr. Ayine cited ethical, professional, and evidentiary concerns for his decision to drop the cases. The cases include those against high-profile individuals such as Dr. Johnson Asiama, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, and Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.
Dame has urged Ghanaians to view these case withdrawals as a deliberate attempt to whitewash corruption cases against former NDC officials.
He warned that such actions undermine the country’s legal system and weaken accountability for financial crimes.¹
