President John Dramani Mahama has announced a comprehensive plan to revamp the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, addressing the challenges that have plagued its implementation.
Delivering his State of the Nation Address (#SONA2025) in Parliament yesterday, Mahama reassured Ghanaians that his administration is committed to improving the policy, rather than scrapping it.
“For the avoidance of doubt, I, John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, will not cancel Free SHS. Instead, we will make it better by fixing the challenges affecting its implementation,” he stated.
Mahama’s plan involves a multifaceted approach to address the policy’s shortcomings. By expanding school infrastructure, the government aims to eliminate the double-track system, which has been a major challenge.
Furthermore, the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) will be unfrozen to finance stalled projects, ensuring that schools have the necessary resources to provide quality education.
The president also emphasized the need to review the school feeding programme, ensuring that students receive nutritious meals that support their academic performance.
Additionally, Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) will be reinstated, allowing parents to play a more active role in their children’s education, while preventing excessive financial demands.
By implementing these reforms, Mahama’s administration aims to strengthen the Free SHS policy, providing more students with access to quality education and bridging the gap in Ghana’s education system.
